You’ll find the Gorilla at home on our 3 ha Onehunga Processing Facility. This was built above the remains of a former landfill site – the kind of place we’re now trying to keep your waste away from. The Gorilla likes the irony in that.

PROCESSING FACILITIES

ONEHUNGA FACILITY

South Auckland is where the magic happens! Our state-of-the-art Commercial and Industrial Waste Processing Facility is the most modern waste sorting process of its kind in Australasia, the largest in New Zealand and the only one in Auckland. The facility receives dry material that is loaded onto the processing line by the fully electric materials handler, through large-scale mechanical and manual sort lines, material is then separated and sent off to various recyclers.

Within our Gorilla-sized 3,000m² building, we operate large-scale mechanical and manual sort lines that process over 10,000 tonnes of commercial and construction & demolition waste each month. Here we separate recyclable materials such as metal, wood, rubble, cardboard, paper, aluminium cans, steel and plastic bottles – diverting waste away from landfill.

Metals are sent to specialist metal recycling plants for processing. Our wood-chipping operation turns treated wood into wood chips, that is used for biofuel and untreated wood into landscaping chips and animal bedding. Whilst our plasterboard processing plant in Auckland separates gypsum for horticultural and agricultural sectors. So when you use Green Gorilla™, you’re not just keeping waste out of landfill, you’re ensuring it lives again in another useful form.

When they’re not out on the road, as well as our regular fleet, you’ll also find our electric trucks resting and re-charging at Onehunga.

Processing Facilities

CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION

From a single construction waste skip bin to complex multiple waste collection services for large construction projects. We have the machinery, experience and recycling centres to get your waste diverted from landfills.

Construction and Demolition produce nearly 570,000 tonnes of waste a year, roughly half the entire landfill volume and equivalent to 23,155 shipping containers of rubbish.

Each month approx. 10,000t of Construction & Demolition waste comes to us for processing.

The uptake of green building techniques in the construction industry has helped better manage the number of waste materials. However, it still creates large amounts of waste that can be recycled and diverted from New Zealand landfills. Our specialist waste processing facility is a vital link in processing to reduce landfills and create recycled by-products.

Within our gorilla-sized 3,000m² building we operate large-scale mechanical and manual sort lines. It’s here we process industrial, construction and demolition waste to achieve greater than 70% diversion from landfills.

The Onehunga plant operates daily to process incoming waste material. The recovered product is shipped out continuously to nearby users or further processed at our facility. Let’s get your waste through our facility for better sustainable outcomes.

COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL

At our facility, we separate recyclable materials from landfill waste—recyclables like metal, cardboard and paper, glass and plastic bottles.
In 12 months, our facility is capable of diverting over 30,000 tonnes of waste from landfills. That’s about the same weight as one hundred and sixty 747 jumbo jets!

Commercial & Industrial Line

With a One Bin For All Your Waste collection service, all your dry general waste goes into one bin.

There’s no need for multiple waste bins on your site, which means fewer bin rental charges, fewer waste collection charges and lower operating costs. With fewer bins onsite, you also free up valuable commercial footage.

FAQs

Our Facilities

What is a waste processing facility?

It’s where rubbish, garbage, junk, and waste are collected, separated, and sorted into categories according to material or recyclability. The rubbish sorting and processing can range from hand picking operations to highly mechanised or technically complex processes.

Green Gorilla’s™ facilities in a nutshell

We separate and recycle waste that our Green Gorilla™ waste trucks collect from our Auckland and Waikato commercial, industrial, construction and demolition clients. The waste types we don’t recycle are sent to other companies for recycling. Finally, the rubbish that is not recycled or re-used is typically destined for landfill.

What waste types do you separate for recycling?

Green Gorilla™ recycles plasterboard, timber and food scraps. We also extract cardboard, paper, plastics, and metals from rubbish that would have previously been sent to landfill. These recyclables are delivered to other recyclers.

Our Facilities

Construction Waste & Commercial Waste

We are the trusted waste diversion and recycling service provider for Auckland and Waikato. At the centre of our operations is our Onehunga facility which also houses our EV fleet, timber recycling, waste diversion and gypsum recycling.

Our Onehunga operation covers approx. 2.7h of land that once was a landfill site. Green Gorilla’s separating and recycling operation employ a significant team of skilled staff who work across an extensive range of functions.

Green Gorilla also operates a recycling facility in Huntly and Te Kawhata in Waikato.

Can I drop off my rubbish at Green Gorilla™?

Our Onehunga processing facility is not open to the public. You can hire a Gorilla skip or Gorilla Bag to dispose of your junk, but we do not allow casual rubbish drop-offs.

For casual drop offs, please use
